Turkish President to Visit Syria May 15 for Mideast Talks

Turkish President Gul will travel to Syria May 15 for talks on bilateral ties and Ankara’s efforts to contribute to Middle East peace, a spokesman said on May 13. While details of Gul’s itinerary were not clear, he is to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad before returning home on May 17. Syria says it is ready to resume the Turkish-mediated indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel but the government of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu seems split on whether to pursue the negotiations launched under former Prime Minister Olmert.

Turkey wants very much to resume facilitation of indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel.
