Turkey’s EU negotiator says EU reforms are for Turkish people

Turkey’s chief EU negotiator Egemen Bağış said July 27 that the government was making reforms for the sake of  the Turkish people, not to make the European Union happy. “We are making these reforms so that our people would be happy, live a more modern way of life, have more democracy, freedom of expression and human rights,” Bağış said. Membership talks between Turkey and EU were launched in 2005. In its regular progress reports, the EU has urged several times that Turkey to step up pace of its reforms.

EU- inspired reforms will benefit Turkish citizens by boosting democratization, and promoting economic development in the country.
