Security Forces intervene in IMF protests in Taksim

Around 6,000 people marching in central Istanbul in protest of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings were confronted by police with pepper spray and pressurized water October 6. Trade unions and professional chambers organized a gathering to protest the meetings of the two financial organizations. Police took about 100 people into custody following the protest in which the protestors shattered windows of shops and banks. The protests continued for a second day, October 7

While the protests occurred outside, Prime Minister Erdoğan, speaking at the IMF meeting, said the world needs a campaign of solidarity and cooperation: “We need to listen to the scream from the world, to the demands and the protests going on outside this hall.”
