The Republic of Turkey marks its 86th Anniversary

Turkey today celebrates the 86th anniversary of the Republic. Ceremonies take place across the country, in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and foreign representations. Government offices, banks, post offices and the Stock Exchange are closed but shopping malls are open.

On October 29, 1923, the Turkish constitution was amended and Turkey became a republic. The Turkish Grand National Assembly unanimously voted Mustafa Kemal as its first President.
