Government stands determined as opposition sharpens criticism

PM Erdogan voices determination to continue proceeding on the path of his government’s “democratic initiative” toward solving the Kurdish issue. The opposition, however, sharpens its criticism, with CHP leader Baykal accusing the government of starting ethnic division in the country. Parliament debated the initiative November 13 in an open session, with government and opposition deputies taking the stage to voice their opinions. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) hopes the initiative will encourage members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to lay down their arms and end the prolonged struggle. Over the weekend in Malatya, Erdoğan said the government is taking its strength from the people to resolve the decades-old problem in defiance of the opposition, which he called “combative” and “slandering.” He described November 13, when Parliament debated the Kurdish initiative, as a “turning point” for Turkey’s unity and solidarity.

The government is holding fast to its determination to stay on the path of its highly contested “democratic initiative” aimed at solving the Kurdish issue as the opposition accuses it of dividing the country.
