Energy Minister: New bids will determine nuclear energy tender model

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız has said the make-up of bids for the construction and operation tender of Turkey’s first nuclear energy power plant will be created by the demands of the interested parties. “If the bids require a system with public partnership in the plant — in the best interests of the country — we have the adequate infrastructure to form the basis for such a possibility. If not, we already have a private sector,” the minister noted. He said the eventual decision on whether to include the state as a partner within the new arrangement will be determined at a later stage depending on the requests of the interested parties.

Last week the Turkish Electricity Trading and Contracting Company (TETAŞ) scrapped the previous tender process by rejecting the single bid from a consortium led by a Russian company. Everyone believes that a new tender process will take place under a new business model. Yildiz’s comments seem to indicate government’s openness to input from the industry for the development of the new model.
