Turkey sees Syria as doorway to Mid-east Market, PM Erdogan

PM Erdogan said December 23 that Turkey considered Syria a doorway to the Middle Eastern market of 320 million, not a market of only 20 million population. Erdogan said during a Turkish-Syrian High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting in Damascus that Middle East peace would be on more solid ground with Turkey and Syria working hand-in-hand with each other. Erdogan thanked President al-Assad for his remarks supporting Turkey’s mediation between Syria and Israel. Syrian and Turkish officials December 22 opened a new railway border crossing on their common border as well as a new border gate at the crossing.

Turkey’s “good neighbors” policy is most ambitious in the case of Syria. Visa requirements were lifted this past October. During PM Erdogan’s visit, the two sides are expected to sign more than 40 bilateral agreements on education, health, transportation and politics.
