Aid convoy spurs crisis between Turkey and Egypt

An aid convoy bringing relief supplies to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has sparked a diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Egypt. The foreign ministers of the two countries have engaged in intense diplomatic traffic to peacefully resolve the problem, said diplomats. But the tension escalated when Egyptian security forces clashed with members of the convoy, which included five Turkish deputies. Israel and Egypt have severely restricted travel to and from the Gaza Strip since Hamas seized power in June 2007.

The situation in Gaza is a source of concern—and now some bilateral friction—for Turkey and Egypt. Both vowed to work together for peace in the region in December when Egyptian President Mubarak visited Ankara.
