Scaffolding at the Hagia Sophia Museum in Istanbul that was used to conduct work on the inner part of the historic building’s dome has been removed January 27 as part of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture activities. The scaffolding had been in place for 17 years, obscuring much of the building’s interior space and weighing 181 tons.
Whether the task of renovation had been completed or the scaffolding was removed as a near-term objective of “Istanbul 2010” is unclear.
