Ankara, Athens prepare for exploratory talks in February

With a relationship rapidly improving since the October 2009 Greek elections, Turkish and Greek diplomats will hold exploratory talks in Ankara in February before staging high-level visits. “Diplomats from the Turkish and Greek foreign ministries will discuss everything, including upcoming high-level visits as well as the correspondence between the prime ministers,” a Greek Embassy spokesman said February 1. Greek FM Droutsas is expected to visit Ankara in late February and PM Erdogan will likely travel to Athens in May.

Both Athens and Ankara are talking about concrete steps that can improve bilateral relations. Behind this talk lies an unspoken hope that improved relations will have a positive spillover effect on Cyprus negotiations.
