EU welcomes Turkey’s “democracy initiative” move and protocols with Armenia, says Spanish Ambassador.

The European Union welcomes recent steps taken by Turkey, especially the government’s “democratic initiative” and protocols signed last October with Armenia to normalize relations, Spanish Ambassador to Turkey, Joan Clos, said February 12.  Amb. Clos, representing the EU presidency, said Turkey had recently undertaken serious reforms.  He added that Spain hopes to open negotiation chapters on food safety, public procurement, social and cultural relations, and energy during its presidency until July 2010.

In recent times, Turkey has been permitted to open only one chapter per presidency. It will be interesting to observe whether Spain can be successful in its intention to open 4-5 chapters.
