Turkish Court formally charges and jails seven senior military officers as EU and U.S. react.

A court in Istanbul charged and ordered seven senior military officers jailed for alleged involvement in the Sledgehammer coup plot of 2003. The seven officers are among the fifty that were recently detained, including the former chiefs of the Turkish Air Force and Navy. It is expected that questioning will continue in coming days. EU Enlargement Commissioner, Stefan Fule, expressed the EU’s ‘serious concern’ over the matter and the importance it attached to the undertaking of fair trials. In contrast, a U.S. State Department spokesman, Philip Crowley, while citing the desirability of fair trials, stated there were “no specific concerns” on the part of the U.S.

Crowley’s statement is for public consumption. There must be U.S. government “concerns” for the escalating numbers and ranks of arrested military officers, recently retired and active duty. President Gul has initiated senior level dialogue to control the tension.
