House Foreign Affairs Committee passes Armenian Resolution; Turkey recalls Ambassador Tan to Ankara

On March 4, 2010, the 46 member House Foreign Affairs Committee passed a non-binding resolution to label the 1915 deaths of Armenians as “genocide” in a 23-22 vote with one abstention. The Resolution calls on President Obama to use the term “genocide” when he delivers his annual speech on the issue in April, and for U.S. policy to formally label the 1915 events as “genocide”. Immediately after passage the Turkish Ambassador to the U.S., Namik Tan was recalled to Turkey.

The same committee passed similar resolutions in 2000, 2005, and 2007. None managed to reach the House floor. Turkish officials had previously warned that passage could have a strong, negative impact on U.S.-Turkish relations, and undermine reconciliation efforts with Armenia.
