Sweden labels mass killing of Armenians ‘genocide’

Sweden’s parliament approved a resolution recognizing the 1915 mass killing of Armenians in Turkey as “genocide,” by the margin of a single vote on March 11, 2010, prompting the Turkish government to recall its ambassador in protest. The resolution also labeled as “genocide” the killings of Assyrians and Pontian Greeks. Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said he regretted the parliament’s decision, saying it “will unfortunately not have a positive effect on the ongoing normalization process between Turkey and Armenia.” Anatolia news agency has reported that Prime Minister Erdoğan canceled a visit to Sweden on March 17.

Coming hard on the heels of the Armenian Resolution in the House Foreign Affairs Committee one week ago, this parliamentary action in Sweden is certain to harden Turkish government responses to both Sweden and the United States.
