Turkish Foreign Minister emphasizes strategic importance of EU membership for Turkey

Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu stated on March 15, that Turkish membership in the EU was “An opportunity for the EU, and EU membership is an extremely important, strategically essential target for Turkey.” Davutoglu made these comments at a meeting with Stefan Fuele, Commissioner for EU Enlargement. The meeting covered a wide array of issues pertinent to Turkey’s membership, specifically the Cyprus issue and Turkey’s domestic reforms.

The current Spanish presidency of the EU has given hope to Turkey that the pace of membership negotiations will quicken. However, Cyprus continues to present a significant road block to Turkey’s EU accession.
