Turkish Energy Ministry releases strategic energy plan for 2010-2014

On March 24, the Turkish Energy Ministry released its strategic energy plan for 2010-2014. The plan focuses on increasing Turkey’s domestic power generation, diversifying natural gas suppliers, increasing the amount of oil pumped to Turkey’s oil hub of Ceyhan and beginning the construction of a nuclear power plant. The government calls for increasing renewable energy to 30% of total energy production by 2023. The plans calls for Turkey to save 10% on its energy costs by 2015 and 20% by 2023 through energy efficiency.

The plan rests on three “pillars:” diversification of natural gas suppliers; increasing domestic production; and energy efficiency.
