Turkish Government takes reform to people, kicks off public campaign

Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek said March 23rd that the Turkish Parliament is in the process of identifying constitutional changes that will likely be submitted to public referendum in mid-July 2010. Turkey’s top justice official, Sadullah Ergin, defended the constitutional changes, saying they had been prepared in close consultation with the European Commission.

European Commission support is not enough to assure support for the proposed amendments. The Constitutional Court has previously cancelled EU-related changes to the Constitution on a number of occasions because they contradicted articles in the Constitution.
