German Chancellor Merkel visits Turkey

On March 29, German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Turkey for a series of discussions focused on Turkey’s EU membership process. Merkel has been widely quoted in the Turkish press as supporting a ‘privileged partnership’ short of full EU membership for Turkey. Upon her arrival, Merkel announced that Turkish schools would be allowed to operate in Germany.

Merkel’s call for a ‘privileged partnership’ has been met with firm opposition from the Turkish government who will accept nothing less than full EU membership. The opening of Turkish schools alleviates a longstanding point of friction between Ankara and Berlin over the Turkish Diaspora community in Germany.
