Estonian president supports Turkey’s EU bid

The European Union should consider Turkey’s membership in the organization as a global strategic issue, Estonia’s president said April 16 in Ankara. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, held a series of high-level talks with Turkish President Gül, Speaker of Parliament Mehmet Ali Sahin and Prime Minister Erdoğan. “Europe should considers its future in terms of a global strategy and accept Turkey into the EU,” Ilves said.

With the notable exception of the Republic of Cyprus, Turkey’s accession problems are with the “old Europe,” not with the “new Europe” states such as Estonia.
