Turkey prevails against top NATO powers in Bosnia case

Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu announced that NATO foreign ministers agreed on April 22 to approve a Membership Action Plan (MAP) for Bosnia, the penultimate step to full member status. According to the Turkish press, Bosnia’s MAP bid initially met with great opposition, leading to strong lobbying efforts by Turkey, particularly in Washington. Turkish and Bosnian officials jointly hailed the agreement as a ‘historic’ success.

Turkey is moving beyond its old position as a subordinate within NATO, to a position of influence within the Alliance.
