Second key article passes; CHP prepares to appeal reform package

Article 23 of the Constitutional reform package, which alters the makeup of the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), passed with 334 votes early on May 6. The ruling Justice and Development party considers Article 23 and Article 17, which changes the structure of the Constitutional Court, the most important articles in the package.

The Government plans to complete necessary parliamentary action on the constitutional amendments package on May 7 and submit the package to President Gul for ratification. The plan calls for the package to be considered in a national referendum on July 18. The leading Opposition Party (CHP) has stated its intention to appeal the entire amendments package to Turkey`s Constitution Court, which has in the past ruled against the government’s attempts to amend the Constitution.
