Turkish constitutional referendum set for September 12

Turkey’s election board announced May 13 that Turkey will hold a referendum on September 12, putting the government-sponsored constitutional reform package to a national vote. Following President Gül’s approval of the government-sponsored constitutional changes, the referendum process officially began with the publication of the decision in the Official Gazette on May 13.

September 12 is a symbolic date in Turkey as it associated with the September 12, 1980, military coup. Turkey`s largest opposition party (CHP) has promised to challenge the amendments package in the Constitutional Court.
