Turkey undeterred by US-led proposal for sanctions on Iran

Citing diplomatic sources, Turkish media May 19 said Ankara remained convinced that a deal Iran accepted earlier in the week would pave the way for a peaceful solution to an international dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program. Diplomatic sources at the same time described talk of sanctions as unhelpful, saying circumstances were not ripe to push for sanctions.

Turkey steadfastly regards sanctions as harmful to its interests as a neighbor and main trading partner (gas) of Iran. However, PM Erdogan is quoted as acknowledging that Turkey would stay “out of the picture” if Tehran failed to fulfill its obligations with the nuclear swap agreement.
