‘Mon chers’ strike back at PM Erdogan

Retired ambassadors, in a written statement hit back at Prime Minister Erdoğan’s criticisms of Foreign Ministry diplomats, saying no diplomat deserves to be the target of such uninformed speech. “Foreign policy is a long-term and serious job. It’s a serious pursuit that requires knowledge, foresight and calm analytical abilities,” read the statement signed by many retired ambassadors.

Erdoğan has recently taken to criticism of retired ambassadors who publicly voice their disagreement with the government’s foreign policy, especially their concerns that Turkey is drifting away from the West. The Prime Minister’s use of the term “mon chers,” which actually was a term of belittlement in Ottoman times, is understood as an attempt to humiliate the diplomats.
