Iran sees ‘readiness’ from Vienna group over fuel swap

Iranian Foreign Minister Mottaki said August 2 that Iran was witnessing “positive” feedback from the Vienna group over May 17 a proposal to swap Iran’s low enriched uranium for enriched uranium fuel cells. Mottaki said Iran’s response to questions raised by the Vienna group over the proposal brokered by Brazil and Turkey has led to some “readiness” from members of the group to talk over the issue. Turkey’s Deputy Undersecretary at the MFA said Tehran has now indicated its preparation to discuss all aspects of the proposed swap.

The extent of Tehran’s genuine readiness to seek out a workable compromise is still untested. What is apparent, however, is that the tougher sanctions have resulted in more accommodating language from Tehran.
