Israel threatens to pull out of UN’s Gaza flotilla probe

Israel on Tuesday threatened to pull out of a U.N. probe into its deadly flotilla raid to keep the panel from grilling its troops. Defense Minister Ehud Barak also told the Israeli Tirkel Commission the flotilla was a “planned provocation.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted there was a “discreet” agreement to exclude military personnel from the U.N. probe, despite an earlier denial from U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon.

The UNSYG’s commission is set to begin its work today. Given Israel’s previous rejection and reaction to a separate investigation launched by the U.N. Human Rights Commission, Turkey’s demands for apology and compensation are unlikely to be fulfilled in the short term.
