Obama declares end of US combat mission in Iraq

From the Oval Office August 31, US President Barack Obama, without mention of a victory, declared an end to US combat mission in Iraq, calling on its people to chart their own destiny as Americans turn to combating al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. Obama is keeping up to 50,000 troops in Iraq for support and counterterrorism training.

The presence of 50,000 troops for training purposes and eventually a more stable, orderly and united Iraq is in the interest of Turkey and the US. This partial withdrawal also alleviates some of Turkey’s concerns regarding the future and status of Northern Iraq, and its related struggle against PKK terrorism.
