A New Era of Bilateral & Strategic Relations Between Turkey and the United States

Plans are moving forward for the American-Turkish Council and its partners, the Turkish-American Business Council (TAIK) and the American Friends of Turkey (AFOT), to host next month the 29th Annual Conference on U.S. – Turkish Relations. The annual conference will bring together leaders from Turkey and the U.S. at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. October 17- 20, 2010.

This year’s Conference theme is “Achieving Common Objectives,” with daily sessions focused on: Trade and Economic Affairs, Defense and Security Affairs, Energy and Infrastructure, European Union, Banking and Finance, Bilateral Political Issues, Agribusiness and Food Industry, and Bio-Technology.

Allies in NATO, Turkey and the United States share a broad range of defense and national security interests, and a broad range of rapidly expanding cooperation between their defense industries. This year’s conference will fully develop those issues, and national security leaders, including National Security Advisor, General James Jones, and Turkey’s Minister for National Defense, Vecdi Gonul, will participate.

The second focal point this year will be cooperation in commerce, trade and investment. The inaugural meetings of the bilateral Framework for Strategic Economic and Commercial Cooperation (FSECC) and its companion bilateral Business Council will coincide with the Annual Conference. Deputy Prime Minister and Economic Minister, Ali Babacan, and Minister of Foreign Trade, Zafer Caglayan, will join Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, and U.S. Trade Representative, Ron Kirk, for this initial meeting. We expect they will also attend the Annual Conference to underline with our attending business leaders the importance that both Ankara and Washington attach to our growing commercial and investment relationship.

Throughout the fully-loaded conference agenda are keynote speakers who are experts in the fields of politics, business, economics, and international affairs. Their inter-action with conference participants will provide for all attendees valuable insights and knowledge of the complex relationship between the United States and Turkey.
