Government Submits motion extending mandate to launch cross border operations

The Turkish government submitted on October 6 a motion extending the mandate to launch cross-border military operations into north of Iraq for another year. The motion allows the military to stage cross-border operations to remove the terrorist threat and attacks against Turkey from PKK camps in northern Iraq. The mandate will be extended for another year as of October 17, 2010.

Renewal of the parliamentary mandate for cross-border military operations means the military will not need to gain parliament’s approval for individual instances of hot pursuit or a more aggressive cross-boarder action. The mandate has been renewed every year since 2003.
