Iran says nuclear swap must be based on Brazil-Turkey deal

Iran said November 3 that any nuclear fuel swap negotiations with the major powers must be based on the May agreement it signed with Brazil and Turkey. “If the Vienna group is ready for negotiation over the fuel swap… it would be based only on the framework defined in the Tehran Declaration,” stated Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

The May 17 nuclear swap agreement by Iran/Turkey/Brazil, and Turkey’s subsequent “No” vote on UN sanctions became instant, serious irritations in the Turkey-U.S. relationship. In the intervening months, Ankara and Washington have tried to put this tough patch behind them. By resurfacing the deal as the basis for a future nuclear swap agreement with the major powers, it’s evident Tehran intends to keep picking at the open sore.
