Prime Minister not clear on headscarf, says main opposition leader

Turkey’s main opposition party leader Kemal Kiliçdaroglu has said Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has not yet given a clear statement regarding the issue of whether girls might be permitted to wear Islamic headscarves at elementary school.

The headscarf issue is a hot button topic in Turkish politics. President Gül initially stated his support for his wife’s remark that headscarves are not appropriate for elementary school age girls.  Prime Minister Erdogan’s comment was cryptic: “ We will prepare the new Constitution after the elections. Afterwards, there will be no need for such statements.  [About wearing headscarves in public schools].”
