Israel asks U.S. to ban Turkish charity behind Gaza flotilla

Israel has asked the United States to consider outlawing the Turkish Humanitarian group behind a flotilla that tried to break Israel’s blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip in May, Israeli officials said January 6. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman reportedly requested the outlawing of the IHH, or Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief, at a meeting with visiting U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano January 4.

Secretary Napolitano’s response to Lieberman’s request is unknown. The USG has been looking into the activities of the IHH since the May 31 tragedy.
