Turkey in hectic diplomacy to prevent chaos in Lebanon

Prime Minister Erdoğan, who met January 17 with the Syrian and Qatari leaders to discuss developments in Lebanon, said he received an invitation to the group January 16 from French President Nicolas Sarkozy and asked his office to reply favorably. A day after announcing it is supporting the French proposal to resolve the political crisis in Lebanon, however, Ankara has apparently bowed to pressure from Iran and decided to put forth its own inclusive “action plan.”

Iran was not included in the French-proposed action group. It is included in the grouping now proposed by Turkey`s Foreign Minister. In a January 12 meeting in Ankara, Iranian Foreign Minister Salahi objected to the inclusion of “outside actors”  and Iran’s exclusion.
