New US envoy to arrive in Turkey

US Embassy in Ankara stated January 19 that the new U.S. Ambassador Frank Ricciardone would arrive in Ankara January 20. Amb. Ricciardone has served since 2009 as Deputy Ambassador and Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. He also served as ambassador to Egypt until 2008, and before that as ambassador to the Philippines. Ambassador Ricciardone began his career in Ankara and Adana, Turkey. He served twice again in Turkey as political advisor to the U.S. and Turkish commanders of Operation Provide Comfort at Incirlik Air Force Base, and as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires.

The top U.S. post in Ankara has been vacant since July, when previous envoy James Jeffrey left to take up a new position as ambassador to Baghdad. At the January 11 American-Turkish Council dinner in honor of him, Ambassador Ricciardone highlighted his commitment to the important US-Turkey relationship and the valuable role of business and investment in sustaining it.
