Turkey, US aligned on strategy for Egypt’s transition process

Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan has expressed his support, following a conversation with U.S. President Obama, for the U.S. strategy of imposing a “transitional government” in Egypt to carry the country to elections. Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoğlu said February 5 that a reasonable transition period was needed in Egypt that would allow a political scene to take shape and political actors to ready themselves for full-fledged multi-party elections.

Erdogan spoke by telephone with President Obama February 4. The White House statement following the phone conversation said the two agreed to “consult closely” as events unfold in Egypt.
