Turkey begins celebrating Nevruz, arrival of spring

Nevruz, the traditional festival which marks the beginning of Spring, and one that has a highly symbolic meaning for Kurds in Turkey and the Middle East, was celebrated across various Turkish cities on March 20. Although most celebrations were peaceful, those in Şanlıurfa’s Viranşehir district were not uneventful as police took into custody eight individuals who chanted slogans in favor of the PKK, threw stones at police and set garbage containers on fire.

Since 2000, the ban on celebrating Nevruz instated during the 1990s has been lifted in Turkey. Although the PKK have at times exploited the celebrations to push their separatist agenda, this year’s celebrations have been quite peaceful for the most part.
